Being a counsellor is actually quite a tough job that is rather draining because one would have to always listen to different clients every single day. However, there are some people who believe that they are very much fit for this kind of work as they love helping people out. If one believes that counselling winnipeg is his calling, then here are some things he should know about.
Now one of the essential things that one would have to do if he would go into this profession is know how to listen to anyone who comes in. This is actually where a technique known as active listening would come in because this is a technique that would build rapport with clients. Now for those who do not know, active listening is using body language to be able to build rapport with a client while listening.
Along with active listening is another technique that is known as reflection. Now the act of reflection is a technique that will allow the client to be at ease with the counsellor and will therefore be more open. Basically, a counsellor does this by rephrasing some of the things that the client has said and adding a few phrases to show that he is listening.
Of course gaining rapport and listening is only the first part of the process but it is a start. The very next step of the process is now to ask questions so that one will know how he can really be of help to his clients. Now questions are there so that the counsellors can get to know the problem of his clients better.
Now when one would do questioning, he has to take note of the two kinds of questions that he may use namely open ended ones and close ended ones. Now the close ones are the ones wherein one can just answer with one word which is either yes or no. This is used if counsellors would want to get a quick answer right away,
The second type of question would be the open ended one which would include an explanation. Now these are the types of questions that cannot be answered by a simple yes or no but with an explanation. Now one does this if he wants to delve deeper into the mind of his client.
Now after the questioning, the next part would then be the advice giving. Now the advice that a counsellor should give should never be pressured onto the one seeking help as it will just push him further away. Each advice should just be a recommendation that the advisor would provide.
So as one can see, there are actually a lot of techniques that one can add into his arsenal. Now in this kind of profession, these are the fundamental techniques that have to be used when dealing with clients. Of course it is better to know about these techniques before going into the field so that one can already be prepared with his arsenal.
